In nature, animals need to forage for their food. Birds and rodents spend hours each day searching for it and really have to work hard. Make sure you also encourage your bird or rodent's natural foraging behavior. Don't always offer food in a ready-made container; hide it, or let them work or puzzle for it. So provide challenge and variety; foraging toys, for example. Birds and rodents are often drawn to things that they can destroy and gnaw on in order to get to something.
